What is Digital Forensics?

Digital Forensics, or Computer Forensics, is the process followed to preserve, identify, extract, recover, analyze and document electronic data as evidence. Often used in either civil or criminal proceedings.

Computer Forensic Specialists use specialized tools, software and techniques to determine what kind of activities and evidence exists on a computer system or electronic storage media such as:

  • Computers
  • Hard disks
  • USB Drives
  • Floppy Disks
  • PDAs
  • Compact Flash Cards

Forensic Specialists can make an exact, forensically sound copy of a hard drive while protecting the integrity of the original data.
